Voytek the Polish war hero bear

Reading about this bear was the most inspirational thing I have done this week and I know of a certain Polack who will probably be even more proud of this furry motherfucker than me. The story is that Voytek was discovered by a group of Polish soldiers in 1943. As a young bear he became attached to the men and was trained to contribute to the unit by carrying mortar shells and to be a source of entertainment drinking beer and pleading for cigarettes. Apparently, he even sniffed out an enemy intruder in the unit's bath hut. Anyway, I thought that as far as animal stories go this one is pretty awesome, especially in light of that recent chimpanzee story with the poor woman losing her face and all. Bear suit man. Awesome or just bat-shit crazy?

The video above is footage from a documentary about a guy named Troy Hurtubise. This guy is interesting because after surviving a bear attack, he had an epihpany (while watching Robocop) that he should build a suit impervious to bears that would be helpful in studying their habits or, I can only assume, beating the shit out of one as payback. Anyhow, 7 years and $150,000 later the bear suit was a reality and the documentary footage here shows him in the suit taking some savage beatdowns from 2 by 4's, crowbars, giant swinging logs and an automobile, but no bears. Truly the most mesmerizing thing you'll see all week. Trust me.

Don't go to Montreal in the winter

I'm on a train headed back to Toronto from Montreal and the girl in the seat across the aisle from me is reading a book called "Make Every Man Want You." I've practically had to jam my fist in my mouth in order not to laugh after seeing this and I almost feel like looking over and saying, "Well, you could start with not reading that fucking book in public and not wearing your pajamas on the train." Also I would suggest to her that wearing high heels, a top that shows something and standing around at the bar at last call would do more than a fucking book. Am I shallow?

Just got back from a forced vacation in the old-people sanatorium that is Florida where I had a lot of time on my hands. For one, I was able to watch Full Metal Jacket for the first time in years and apparently there is still enough offensive material in that film to entertain me. Also, I watched my first sober Super Bowl in about five years. Nursing three Rolling Rock's for a few hours I was actually able to listen to the colour commentary from John Madden, which was really kind of fun for a change. Next year I propose a drinking game based on how many times Madden says the word "penetration" during the course of the broadcast. It's funny thinking about how pissed off my asshole p.e. teacher got in middle school during sex ed. when he said that word and everybody laughed.
